The other person: Hi Yasmin. How are you?
Me: I’m good.. And you?
The other person: Great. Do you still work in Alcatel-Lucent?
Me: No. I quit in January.
The other person: And what are you doing now?
Me: I am working on a Social Educational Project that I had founded in June 2010. It’s for the financially underprivileged in Egypt and one of the projects of a Non-Profit Foundation that we are establishing now.
The other person: That’s Cool.. But I meant what is your current job?
Me: That’s my current job.
The other person: No No.. Your FULL-TIME job?
Me: I get it. That’s my full-time job.
The other person: Ahhh.. That’s Cool.. And is it financially rewarding?
Me: Financially, not yet. I’m not getting paid yet. Still Volunteering. But rewarding: BIG TIME.
The other person, not quite understanding the meaning of “rewarding” if a pay-cheque is not there, and apparently not interested in finding out the reason: So you are not getting paid? Then what pays your bills?
Me: I’m temporarily using my savings till the legalization of our NGO is done.
The other person: But that’s something you can do next to your job. Why are you not doing so?
Me: Because I don’t want to.The other person wondering - Ok. So she quit her fancy job to solely do unpaid social work. What a WASTE !!!!
The other person: Ok. Good Luck!!!No need to reply back. Would just like to dedicate this song!!
Society falsely teaches us that money is the key to happiness and that helping others is of less value than making a profit for ourselves and those around us. If one does not follow their heart however, they will never be happy. On that note, I am glad that you were able to turn your back on what society dictates and follow what was important to you! You are making so many wonderful changes in these kids' lives. I honestly believe that when you dedicate your lives to others as you have, that is where the real treasure in life can be found. May you have even greater successes and days full of blessings and joy! Love you!
ReplyDeleteMaria;
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your amazingly sweet and motivating words. Really mean a lot to me.
Totally agree with everything you said, and I find it pathetic when I am put in those situations.
